Gold Desorption Electrolysis System Overview
A gold desorption electrolysis system is an integrated solution for recovering gold from gold-loaded activated carbon after the adsorption stage. It combines gold desorption (elution) and electrolysis (electrowinning) in a coordinated process, enabling gold to be stripped from activated carbon and subsequently recovered from the gold-bearing solution.
The system is widely used in gold processing plants incorporating carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-leach (CIL), and carbon-in-column (CIC) processes. During operation, the system treats loaded carbon under controlled conditions to transfer the adsorbed gold into solution. The resulting pregnant solution is then processed through electrolysis, where dissolved gold is deposited onto cathodes for subsequent collection and refining.
Designed for reliable operation in modern gold recovery plants, the system integrates key desorption and electrolysis components into a compact and efficient configuration. Its design can help simplify process integration, optimize energy and reagent consumption, and provide stable operation under different plant conditions.
Gold desorption electrolysis systems can be customized to suit processing capacity, loaded-carbon volume, operating conditions, energy availability, and site requirements. Whether used in a small processing plant or a large-scale mining operation, the system can be configured to match the specific requirements of the gold recovery circuit.
How Does The System Work?
1. Loaded Carbon Preparation
- Activated carbon containing adsorbed gold is removed from the adsorption circuit.
- The carbon is screened and washed to remove slurry and contaminants.
2. Desorption/Elution
- The loaded carbon is placed in an elution column.
- A heated alkaline solution—typically containing sodium hydroxide and, depending on the process, cyanide—is circulated through the carbon.
- Elevated temperature and pressure help transfer the adsorbed gold from the carbon into the solution, producing a pregnant electrolyte.
3. Electrolysis/Electrowinning
- The gold-bearing electrolyte is pumped through an electrowinning cell.
- Electrical current causes dissolved gold species to be reduced and deposited onto cathodes, commonly as a gold-bearing sludge or metallic deposit.
4. Gold Sludge Treatment
- The cathode material is removed and washed.
- The recovered sludge is typically dried and then smelted to produce doré, which can subsequently be refined.
5. Carbon Regeneration
- After elution, the stripped carbon may be thermally regenerated in a kiln.
- The regenerated carbon is returned to the adsorption circuit.
